Damascene steel is produced by forge welding in one piece from different grades of steel with different carbon content from a 200x30x4mm plate. The result is an alternation of hard, soft and viscous layers. The consequence is that a so-called "micro-saw" is formed on the blade, which provides excellent long-term cutting properties of the knife;The average number of layers is 1000 - 1500.the mechanical properties of damask improve to some extent with increasing number of layers until the material starts to behave again as a homogeneous block. It is desirable to achieve the target number of layers with as few welds as possible. This is achieved by precision work, and by increasing the number of layers in the packet and by multiple (i.e. more than twice) chopping and folding after each weld.

After many years of experience forging damascus blades, Okské Knives has concluded that the optimal number of layers ranges from 1000 to 1500.

A knife made of damascus steel requires extra care as it is prone to rusting. The knife must be wiped carefully after each use and should not be exposed to a damp environment for long periods of time.

The structure of damascus steel differs from knife to knife. Each knife is unique.

Hardness of steel: HRC 60-63

The varieties of trees used:
Sapeli (Entandophragma cylindricum)
Density 640-660 kg/m3
Native to Africa, it grows in moist forests. Brava ranges from dark red to light brown or pale pink. The fibre structure is uniform with clearly visible pores. It is easy to work mechanically and yet sufficiently resistant to careless handling. The advantages of this variety include, above all, its incredible lightness and durability.
