Two-component powders, in addition to the basic nitrocellulose, contain nitroesters, usually nitroglycerin (10-38%), as an energy substance.
The powders also contain small amounts of chemical stabilisers or other substances, similar to single component powders. Two-component powders may have a higher energy content than one-component powders.
Depending on the type, their calorific content ranges from 3800-5200 kJ/kg. Their ballistic and other properties are generally more interesting to the user than those of single component powders. Dust grains may take the form of cylinders, tubes, plates, discs, ribbons or spheroids.
