steel 8CR14MoV - is equivalent to Japanese steelAICHI AUS-8, excellent price/performance ratio.

Steel AUS8-A - is martensitic stainless steel, which is slightly below conventional steel440C and has a carbon-chromium ratio of 0.57/13% in austenite, which is formed at a temperature of 1100oC. Its hardness when quenched in oil and then annealed at 150oC is at62 to 63HRC. Practical experience with the application can be found in such companies as Spyderco, Cold Steel, CRKT and knife makers of individuals - A. G. Russell.
These are the Deerhunter (Russell), Kalypso Jr. (Spyderco), large and small Voyager (Cold Steel) and the aforementioned M16 (CRKT), which were evaluated for corrosion resistance and durability compared to VG-10 and D2 steels. Deerhunter knives (comparable properties) and lower cutting capabilities than D2 steel, VG-10 and CPM-10V in Calypso Jr. tests when cutting rope, wood and laminated material. Cold Steel's AUS8-A Voyagers, both the medium compared to the U2 blade, and especially the large Voyager in the cutting tests, showed very good results (Cold Steel won several demonstration tests at knife shows with the large Voyager!).

Finally, the steel can beAUS8-A classify directly between 12C27 and 13C26 steels, respectively 8C13CrMoV and especially with regard toalloy carbon/chromium ratio and an austenitizing temperature of 1100oC. But the hardness and corrosion resistance is slightly improved. The carbide content is higher in the structural volume and this results in their micro-flaking during the cutting process. This results in a decrease in blade stability. The wear resistance of a blade made ofAUS8-A is good. Steel is evaluated only as a cutting tool, which is not always the only use. It is enough to change the hardness of the steel (instead of63 HRC "only" 60 HRC and the view on the use of steel is immediately a bit different (by Benchmade).

  • Cleaning a hunting knife: every knife deserves care. Particles attached to the surface of the blade from aggressive substances can begin to corrode and form rust-like stains on the surface of the knife. However, it is not the knife blade that rusts, but the particles attached to the blade. It is better to take care of your knife and wash and oil it after use.
  • Knife sharpening: for the blade of the hunting knife made of 8Cr14MoV steel we recommend using diamond and water sharpening stones.
